In 1973, folk legend Sandra Kerr was asked by television trailblazer Oliver Postgate to provide music for his new childrens' TV show Bagpuss. The magical songs that Sandra wrote and performed with partner John Faulkner became an integral part of the show, from Uncle Feedle and The Bony King of Nowhere to the legendary rounds sung by the mice on the mouse organ! Sandra also provided the voice of Madeleine the Rag Doll and - she is keen to point out - Janey Mouse, thus ensuring himself immortality as part of a programme voted in a 1999 BBC poll as Britain's favourite-ever children's TV show.
But Sandra's life beyond Bagpuss has been extraordinary, too. In the early 1960s, she was mentored by Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger, the firebrand pioneers of the British folk music revival, and became an integral part of their radical Critics Group, even travelling to Cuba to perform for Fidel Castro. In more recent years, she has been director of the folk choir Wercasfolk, and - as founder of the all-female fourpiece Sisters Unlimited - has continued to write songs that are funny, fearless and thought-provoking in equal measure. And these traits have been inherited by her BBC Radio Folk Award-winning daughter, Nancy, who Sandra has regularly accompanied. In this warm, nostalgic show, Sandra is joined onstage by writer, broadcaster and Bagpuss devotee Bob Fischer to share the songs and stories of her fascinating life. There are singalong songs, strange instruments, previously-unseen photos, mouse ears, bedtime stories and a stage festooned with all things Bagpussy... including some original props! So come along for an evening of breadcrumbs and butterbeans, as Sandra shares the songs and stories of her life... from Bagpuss and beyond.
